Charlie and Larissa Cannon (Jack Reynor and Laia Costa) are living and working in Cairo when their daughter, Katie (Natalie Grace) goes missing. The shattered family, now living in Albuquerque, is stunned when the girl suddenly reappears eight years later. But what should have been a joyful family reunion quickly turns into a nightmare as she transforms into something terrifying.

I enjoyed Evil Dead Rise in 2019, but it seems odd that writer/director Lee Cronin gets his name in the title of his next movie, a re-imagining of the classic monster story, as he is not exactly a household name. But maybe it is meant as an indication that this is unlike any Mummy movie you would have seen before. Whilst that is creditable, the part Egyptian setting is wasted and setting it in the current day, or near current day as everyone seems to have video recorders, does not work for me.

Having said that, the first half includes some creepy moments, even if it later descends into too much familiarity, like any number of possessed kid films I have seen over the years. There is also a sequence at a wake that descends so much into grotesque silliness, I was laughing out loud.

The performances are no more than adequate, with the exception of May Calamawy who plays the Cairo based detective searching for Katie, who is very good. I would like to have seen more of her at work as her investigation was the highpoint of the film.

So, this has its moments and kept me entertained, but it is one of the weakest Mummy themed movies.
