Only a few months after Shelter, Jason Statham blasts back onto our screens in this action thriller (obviously) directed by Jean-François Richet and written by Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis. Statham is the typically named Cole Reed, who witnesses his billionaire shipping boss’s murder and finds himself framed for the crime. Trying to find out what is going on, he gets onto one of the company’s ships, only to discover a people smuggling operation.
It is quite hard to review Statham’s recent movies. If you like one you will probably like them all. His characters are interchangeable, usually ex-forces with a dark secret in his past, and give or take an American accent, his performances don’t vary. But, I generally find them very entertaining, and Mutiny is no exception. It is pared down stuff as Cole, along with the one crew member he can trust, Angie Ellis, played winningly by Annabelle Wallis, navigate round the vessel, despatching the bad guys.
Richet directed the excellent Plane a few years ago and he keeps Mutiny moving at a similar fast pace. It may be predictable stuff but it is very enjoyable.
