Furniture shop owner Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is struggling to cope with his alcoholism and recent divorce. He regularly visits therapist Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), who is working through her own trauma and, at nights, he has taken to sleeping in his failing store. One evening, he sees light coming from a crack in the wall and finds he is able to walk through the wall into an otherworldly dimension.
This curious horror film was directed by 20 year old Kane Parsons and he is getting a lot of praise, but I was not overly impressed. Parsons has made his name as a YouTuber and I think it shows. He has a lot of ideas and an eye for an arresting visual, but shows little indication of how to corral it into a coherent narrative. His screen writer Will Soodik has a limited and patchy filmography and I think Parsons could have done with someone more experienced to shape his ideas into something better than what we are presented with.
What it does have is a top notch cast, and my favourite scenes are of Clark’s therapy sessions. But once those are dispensed with, we get a story that becomes sillier and more dull as it goes on.
