In this weird twist on the Purge idea, it is illegal to have pre-marital sex in the USA apart from on one night each year. In New York, Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner) meet on that night.
Makers of romcoms are presumably always looking for ways to tweak what can be a stale formula, and writer Travis Braun largely succeeds with his novel concept. In today’s America it is just about believable and he makes the most of the idea. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments, especially in the first half, and I particularly enjoyed cameos from Pete Davidson and Bobby Cannavale.
Turner and Barbaro make a good couple and I enjoyed how they kept bumping into each other throughout the evening. But, the fun did flag in the last act as it approached its inevitable ending that included the strange message that the sex ban may actually be a good idea.
