The Colleen Hoover potboiler adaptations continue with Verity, written by Nick Antosca and directed by Michael Showalter. The ubiquitous Anne Hathaway stars as author Verity Crawford, who, incapacitated after a mysterious accident, is unable to finish her successful but trashy psychological thriller series. Her husband, Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) enlists the help of struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) who moves into their fancy lakeside house so she can use Verity’s copious notes.

Suffice to say, everything is not as it seems.

Verity is slickly made and all three leads are fine, but the plot is complete tosh. I quite liked the opening section where Jeremy and Lowen meet in strange circumstances, but the story goes rapidly downhill once Lowen is installed in Verity’s office. The various twists, that are dependent on Lowen finding Verity’s hidden manuscripts at the most convenient times, are signposted a mile off and the sex scenes thrown into the mix are totally superfluous.

I expect that Verity will be another hit, so the next adaptation of Hoover’s pulpy nonsense will be just around the corner.
