2002’s Resident Evil is my favourite video game adaptation, though the sequels gradually descended in quality. This reboot is directed by Zach Creggar, fresh from his Weapons triumph. He also wrote the screenplay, in conjunction with Shay Hatten.
Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier, who is in the process of making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital when an outbreak of infected monsters forces him to fight for survival. Abrams is great as a relatable everyman, his recurring foul-mouthed muttering to himself providing a lot of chuckles. Creggar and Hatten’s script is, in fact, surprisingly funny and Creggar knows how to direct for the maximum amount of scares and the first hour or so was excellent.
It does not quite keeps its momentum until the end though. It goes into more familiar monster territory and the ending was too knowingly geared to this becoming a franchise.
