94 year old character actress June Squibb stars in this comedy written and directed by Josh Margolin. She plays 93 year old Thelma Post who lives alone in Los Angeles. When she gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, she sets out on a treacherous quest across the city to reclaim what was taken from her.
In many ways, this is a typical American indie movie. Quirky characters, a fairly slim plot and some wry humour. It even has Poker Posey playing Thelma’s daughter. That does not mean that it was unenjoyable though. Squibb provides a formidable performance and Richard Roundtree is great in his final role as Thelma’s friend who joins her on her mission. Posey is, of course, excellent and I liked Fred Hechinger as Thelma’s grandson.
Slight and quite fanciful, but fun too.
