The final part of The Strangers trilogy from Renny Harlin arrives only a few months after the previous instalment with Madelaine Petsch, Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, and Richard Brake all returning. Maya (Petsch) tries to defeat the masked killers once and for all.
I cannot claim this series is a classic but the first two parts had a pared down, grisly appeal. This conclusion, though, is a let down. It is devoid of scares or suspense and feels longer than its 91 minute run time. It is not helped by extensive flashbacks explaining how the killer trio got together that did not feel necessary.
The characterisation is sketchy. Maya veers from a tough woman prepared to kill to survive to totally compliant, foregoing chances to escape. Also, three new characters are introduced. Maya’s sister, Debbie (Rachel Shenton) and her husband, Howard (George Young) come looking for Maya. With them is a bloke called Marcus (Miles Yekkini) who appears to be in charge but it is not explained who he is. No matter, he is soon killed off, and the couple are barely in it before they are dispatched.
Brake adds some creepiness and provides the one shocking moment. The story fizzles out to a disappointing ending with a half hearted attempt to hint at a follow up. If you have seen parts 1 and 2, you will want to see how things are tied up, but it goes out with a whimper.
