This disaster drama directed by Mahalia Belo has a top notch cast that includes Jodie Comer, Joel Fry, Benedict Cumberbatch, Gina McKee, Katherine Waterston, and Mark Strong.
The UK is in crisis after continuous torrential rain has caused flooding on an unprecedented scale, leading to a humanitarian crisis. Comer plays a new mother, who flees London and heads north with her partner (Fry) and baby.
This is a pleasingly stripped-down drama, effectively directed by Belo, eschewing most of the usual disaster movie trappings. It feels especially timely with the recent floodings that only the insane can deny will get worse. How orderly society can so easily breakdown is realistically portrayed too.
Comer is brilliant as the damaged but determined mother, well supported by Fry and Waterston in particular. I did not quite buy the upbeat ending but this is a hugely promising feature debut from Belo.
