This dark comedy film directed by Tim Story and written by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins is based on the 2018 short film of the same name. A group of black American friends decide to stay at a cabin in the woods but they become targeted by a masked killer.
More often than not, attempts to combine comedy and horror fail on both counts. But The Blackening has a number of laugh out loud moments, mostly around the fate black characters in horror films and on mainstream TV, as well as some funny physical comedy. There are also a few decent scares along the way.
Of the cast, Melvin Gregg as a reformed gangster and Antoinette Robertson as a surprisingly tough lawyer fare the best. Admittedly, the identity of the person behind the murderous plan is very obvious but that did not diminish my enjoyment.
