At the end of a hot summer, four 11 year old girls – Lola (Sanai Victoria), Mari (Eden Grace Redfield), Daisy (Lia Barnett) and Dina (Madalen Mills) spend time walking aimlessly through some woodland outside of their small town. They discover the corpse of a man but do not want to tell anyone, so they can share the secret and avoid questioning about it.
The coming-of-age movie is one we see a lot and the most obvious comparison for James Ponsoldt’s movie is Stand By Me. I do not think that it will be held with the affection that film is but there is enough to enjoy despite some flaws.
It feels quite uneven. Some parts of the script are pretty clunky, but there are also a couple of outstanding scenes, one in a bar as the girls try to identify the dead man, and another as they discuss what they will be when they grow-up. The performances from the kids are variable. Mills is impressive throughout but the others struggle at times.
