Michelle Williams re-unites with acclaimed director Kelly Reichardt in this comedic drama. She plays Lizzy, a talented sculptor who’s career has never quite taken off, but is in preparation for a major new show.
I imagine that this is a polarising film. Lizzy is a sullen character and there are no big dramatic moments. Instead we see Lizzy encounter a variety of, mostly minor, inconveniences in the week leading up to her show. Despite the low stakes, I found myself pulled into the story and enjoying the low key moments of humour too.
Williams embodies the awkward artist brilliantly, and both Hong Chau as her landlady/fellow artist and Judd Hirsch as her eccentric Dad are excellent.
Showing Up has been released simultaneously in cinemas and to rent on streaming platforms.
