Patricia (Haley Bennett) travels on business from the US to Cornwall. Unable to get accommodation at a major hotel, she gets a room at a boutique hotel. Unbeknownst to her, the hotel is run by her estranged ex-husband, Idris (Sam Riley) – who she divorced a decade earlier – and his girlfriend Louise (Marisa Abela).

The set-up could have taken the story down a comedic/farcical route, but instead, this becomes an intense drama. That should have worked with the quality of acting talent on display. But the screenplay is patchy at best and the story is left to meander boringly through a middle section involving Patricia and Idris getting drunk. Both the alcoholic Patricia and self-centred Louise are pretty unlikeable and the direction is also over indulgent, not reining in the actors and letting scenes go on too long. So, the problems with this film lay squarely with Jamie Adams who both wrote and directed it.

It does end pretty well but it feels like a slog before that, even at just 82 minutes.

She is Love can be seen at select cinemas and streamed at home.
