Benjamin Caron’s thriller Sharper features Tom, a quiet young man who owns a bookstore, played by Justice Smith, who falls for a beautiful woman named Sandra (Briana Middleton). But when Sandra reveals her brother is in trouble and needs a large sum of money, the story spirals into a series of cons and double-crosses.

This is pretty slick stuff, handsomely shot with a top drawer cast that also includes John Lithgow and the great Julianne Moore. But it did not quite live up to expectations. It felt a bit mechanical with a twist coming along every 15 or 20 minutes once the story was established and those became increasingly easy to predict.

Sharper is available on Apple TV+ and in some cinemas.
