Veteran horror director Sam Raimi returns with his first non-IP release since 2009’s Drag Me To Hell. Written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien star as an employee Linda and her cruel boss, Bradley, who become stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. As they attempt to survive, the power dynamic starts to shift.
The opening scenes in the office felt excruciatingly accurate, with Linda overlooked and ridiculed by Bradley and his male colleagues. But other than that, this is a film best seen with as few preconceptions and as little plot knowledge as possible. The genre shifts with the viewer’s sympathies as we learn more about the pair and what they are capable of.
McAdams is excellent, her character transforming more than once when she starts to thrive in her new surroundings. Raimi keeps things ticking along, with the expected gory moments and a couple of nice twists.
