The leaders of the world’s wealthiest democracies are gathered at the annual G7 summit, in Germany, to form a statement about an unnamed crisis. Whilst they are there, strange events occur.

Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson shared writing and directing duties and the end result is a real curiosity. Not much happens for long periods and a lot of the satire is heavy-handed, but it is frequently amusing and I was always interested in how things would work out. All of the leaders are idiotic in their different ways and the ultimate message seems to be that we need to stop endless meaningless procrastination, and actually deal with the world’s problems.

Cate Blanchett heads the cast as the German chancellor and Charles Dance is good value as the elderly American president, though he makes no attempt to affect an American accent. I particularly liked Denis Ménochet as the conceited French president.

Definitely not for everyone and not a total success but this is the sort of film that could attract a bit of a cult following.
