A few weeks ago, Rare Beasts was released in the cinemas and it is already now available to rent at home. It is a real labour if love for Billie Piper. She has not only written and directed the film, but also stars as Mandy, a single Mum who meets and falls for Pete (Leo Bill).

This sounds like a romcom set up but Piper goes out of her way to veer from the formula. So, I would definitely give her credit for originality and her direction is pretty impressive. But there is one major flaw and that is in the array of characters. Pete is a horrible misogynist and Mandy is ridiculously annoying and frustrating. In fact, amongst the gallery of grotesques that populate this film, there is not a single one that I could recognise as a human being that I have ever met.
