It is 1996 and a group of Catholic schoolgirls from Fort William – Finnoula, Chell, Orla, Kylah and Manda – head to Edinburgh for a choir competition. But, they are not interested in that. In their spare time they aim to sleep with as many men as possible.
It took me a while to get on board with Our Ladies. Initially, the girls appeared not to be very well defined and the constant talk of sex was getting tedious. Things pick up though when they arrive in the capital as their different characters and the tensions between them come to the fore.
It is Finnoula’s plotline that becomes both the most interesting and surprising, with Abigail Lawrie excelling in the role. On the other hand, cancer stricken Orla’s tragic story feels the most obvious and familiar, having seen a number of films in recent years about terminally ill kids. Of the rest of the cast, Marli Siu makes the biggest impression as a very talented singer.
In the end, there is enough energy on screen and enough funny and touching moments to make my reaction more positive by the end.
