B movie Nobodyhas gathered a lot of critical appreciation in the last few weeks so I took the opportunity to see it on a big screen before it disappears.
Bob Odenkirk stars as Hutch Mansell, a seemingly timid family man who takes no action to defend his wife and children when someone breaks into their house. But the incident provokes Hutch into taking a stand, bringing long dormant skills into play.
On the face it, this could, therefore, be any Liam Neeson movie, and I have certainly enjoyed many of them since he moved into action movie mode, but a number of things set this apart. The action and fight scenes are superbly choreographed by director Ilya Naishuller, so that they never become repetitive.
The violence is realistic, gory and bone crunching. But most of all is the wicked sense of humour that runs through it. Christopher Lloyd, who plays Hutch’s Dad, in particular has some terrific lines. And to top it off, there is Pat Benatar’s Heartbreaker prominently on the soundtrack!
A lot of comparisons have been made to John Wick but Nobody is leaner, more inventive, better acted and funnier.
