Adapted from her popular novel by Suzanne Allain, Mr Malcolm’s List is set in 19th century England, where a spurned young woman Julia (Zawe Ashton) plots her revenge against Mr Malcolm (Sope Dursu). She enlists the reluctant help of her childhood friend Selina (Freida Pinto) and Lord Cassidy (Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
It is refreshing to see a period drama that is not yet another adaption of a novel by Emily Bronte or her contemporaries. It is also a brave decision to make Mr Malcolm a pompous prig and Julia a conceited dimwit. However, the plot does follow the standard rom com template, and it is hard to understand how the charming Selina would fall for Malcolm.
Still, a fairly agreeable, Sunday afternoon with a cuppa, watch. Plus, Pinto and Cohen are good value.
