Madison Mitchell (Annabelle Wallis) is pregnant again following a series of miscarriages. Her violent husband attacks her and she locks herself in her bedroom. When she goes down in the morning, she finds her husband dead. It initially seems like a random murder, but soon links to Madison’s childhood are uncovered.
The first three quarters of Malignant, work pretty well as a mystery. Detectives Shaw (George Young) and Moss (Michole Briana White) investigate as the killings mount and they try to uncover how Madison is involved. What it isn’t, at any time, is scary, so like most of director James Wan’s films, it cannot be said to be working as a horror movie.
Then we get the big reveal/twist and it is utterly bizarre! It makes no real sense and leaves way too many unanswered questions. Wan does stage a decent action set piece to round things off, but we are then meant to buy into a happily-ever-after ending amidst dozens of dead bodies that will need to be explained away.
