With ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ being released only a few months ago, and ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ still in cinemas, this week sees the release of another zombie comedy, ‘Little Monsters’. Dave (Alexander England) is a bit of a slacker, with no job and dumped by his girlfriend. When he meets and falls for his nephew’s teacher, Audrey (Lupita Nyongo’o), he agrees to help out on a school trip to a petting zoo. Whilst there, the zoo is descended upon by a horde of ravenous zombies. Dave and Audrey have to try to keep the kids in their care alive.
The most original things about this film are the settings and the children being in the forefront of the events. Otherwise the mixture of gore and gags seems pretty familiar. There are a few decent chuckles, especially in the first half of the film but it could never be described as scary.
The limited budget size is obvious but the performances are all pretty game, and it is a fair entry into the crowded genre.
