In Hereditary, Toni Collette stars as Annie. Shortly after the death of her mother, strange and disturbing occurrences start happening to Annie and her family.
Hereditary reminded me in a lot of ways of The Witch from a couple of years ago. Billed as a horror movie, for a lot of the film it feels like a family drama. But during the long-build-up there is a distinct sense of unease and a real creepiness. Similarly, as things begin to unravel in the final act, the effectiveness diminishes and the ending doesn’t really work.
For the most part, though, whilst the horrors remain in your imagination, the film does impress. There are some good scary jolts without resorting to jump scares and Toni Collette is great as the increasingly unhinged Annie.
