Ageing conman Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) makes contact with a wealthy widow, Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren), via an online dating site. His plans to steal her money, though, do not go as he expects.

On the whole this is a hard film to dislike. The two leads are obviously having a good time, and ham it up marvellously. With its twists, some obvious, others not, it has the feel of an extended episode of ‘Tales of the Unexpected’. With the addition of a little incongruously unnecessary nudity and violence that is much more justified.

As twist follows twist, though, it does get a little silly and over contrived. Amongst the game performances, Russell Tovey brings something much more subtle and controlled as Betty’s suspicious grandson.
