Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris, a young man travelling to meet the parents of his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) for the first time. Rose comes from a privileged white family and Chris is worried about their reaction when they find out he is black, but Rose assures him they are far from racist. When they arrive, it doesn’t take long for Chris to start to feel very uncomfortable, and then he begins to think that Rose’s family and friends may have some very sinister ideas.
Clearly attempting to lift the lid on hidden racism behind the façade of liberal white America, Get Out is at its best mostly in the first-half as the tension builds, especially in a nightmarish party sequence when Chris’ fears to become realised. The revelation of what is actually is going on and the standard final act descending into violence are much less effective. Also, the family is too weird straight away for the big twist moment to be anything other than obvious.
The cast are all fine with Marcus Henderson as Chris’s best mate hilarious in what could have been a very annoying part. Once again though, Caleb Landry Jones demonstrates his ineptitude as he overacts as Rose’s brother.
Decent stuff if a little overrated.
