It has been a few days since I watched Bacurau, and it still feels like I am processing this odd but mostly compelling movie. In a remote area of Brazil, a young woman, Teresa (Barbara Colen) returns to her village to attend her grandmother’s funeral. The village seems to be in an increasingly bad way, short of food, no running water and fading mobile phone coverage. It also appears to have disappeared from all satellite maps. Just out of town a group of foreigners have gathered with the intention of killing most of the inhabitants…

The first half of the film is like a woozy nightmare with people behaving bizarrely, and taking some sort of unnamed drug. The second half is a full on bloodbath as the interlopers make their move. With the current political situation in the country, there are some obvious parallels but there is a lot that is unexplained. Why exactly is this happening in Bacurau? What role does the corrupt mayor play in the events?

The unanswered questions just add to the uneasy feeling this film left me with!
