Sônia Braga has had a long career and it seemed for some time the high point would be her excellent turn in Kiss of the Spiderwoman in 1985. However, with Aquarius she has probably transcended that. She dominates this film, appearing in nearly every scene as Clara, a 65 year-old music critic and widow. She has lived in her apartment for many years and when a development company want to knock the block down; she is the only resident who refuses to sell to them.
Interweaving stories from Clara’s past with her struggle with the devious developers, writer / director Kleber Mendonça Filho does a fine job. At 2 hours 26 minutes, it is probably a little bit overlong and the damning evidence that Clara finds that ultimately allows her to stay is frustratingly vague. But, Braga’s excellent performance keeps your attention throughout.
