After the box office success of It Ends With Us, author Colleen Hoover seems to be flavour of the month. Following last year’s Regretting You, she has adapted another one of her books, with the help of Lauren Levine, for director Vanessa Caswill. A mother of a young child, Kenna (Maika Monroe), makes a tragic mistake that kills her boyfriend, Scotty, and sends her to prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns to her hometown in Wyoming, hoping to rebuild her life and earn the chance to reunite with her daughter, Diem (Zoe Kosovic).

I suppose I am not the target audience, but I am struggling to understand Hoover’s massive popularity. Reminders of Him is a completely unremarkable potboiler, that plods from one predictable plot point to the next, leading to a conclusion that was machine tooled to have the audience in tears, but which left me cold. It did not help that Monroe and Tyriq Withers who plays Scotty’s best friend who she falls for are very bland. There is some better performances in the supporting cast, including Bradley Whitford and Lauren Graham as Scotty’s parents.

Not terrible, but with the obvious story beats and the generic mopey soundtrack it felt like it was written by AI.
