There seems to have been a glut of biopics recently, and here is another that is written and directed by Sofia Coppola. It is based on the 1985 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon and it stars Cailee Spaeny as the titular character with Jacob Elordi, fresh from Saltburn, as Elvis.
Bearing in mind the source material, it is no surprise that Priscilla comes across better than Elvis, which will no doubt enrage many of his fans. The singer appears to be little more than a man child, surrounding himself with his old friends rather than forging a proper relationship with his partner, and with some unreasonable demands of Priscilla.
Spaeny is excellent, capturing both Priscilla’s initial innocence and also her growing maturity remarkably. Her performance though is one of the few things to recommend. The story is frankly quite dull, the direction flat and there are some poor musical choices.
