I was not expecting a third film in this series after the second seemed to be a damp squib but more than 20 years after the first film, Nia Vardalos returns as Toula. This time, she also directs this story of her character returning to Greece to find her deceased Dad’s old friends.

Unfortunately this is not an improvement on the previous instalment. With most of Toula’s family joining her on the trip, Vardalos’ screenplay is stuffed full of subplots taking the focus off the main story and lessening any emotional impact it may have had. In fact, one of them, involving two new characters getting married, becomes the main plot, which felt a little odd.

Whilst Vardalos remains an engaging presence, she gives herself very little to do. There are a few mild chuckles but too many of the supposedly funny moments fall flat.
