The always excellent Dev Patel not only stars in this revenge drama but he also makes his directorial debut, using a script he co-wrote with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. He plays Kid, a seemingly unassuming young man who embarks on a quest to find and murder the powerful men who killed his Mum.
This is a hugely impressive debut behind the camera by Patel. The choreography of the numerous fight sequences is tremendously done, and he conjures up some striking images in the quieter moments. It is less surprising that he is excellent in the lead role, which re-affirmed my belief that he would make a great Bond, though I know that is unlikely.
My only criticism is that some of the mystical mumbo-jumbo is a little overdone, but this is one of the most purely enjoyable films of the year so far.
