Missing is billed as an ‘anthology sequel’ to 2018’s Searching and is from the same production team. It does not share any of the characters of that film and it has new directors, Nicholas D Johnson and Will Merrick. Instead, it stars Storm Reid as June Allen, a teenager who tries to find her missing mother, Grace (Nia Long) after she disappears whilst on holiday in Colombia with her new boyfriend.
Missing has the same conceit as Searching in that in takes place entirely on screens and surprisingly that is still fresh and effective. As June furiously searches for her Mum using online tools, I was completely hooked and gripped. At one point, it seemed like there was going to be a very similar twist to the big one in Missing, and I was completely wrongfooted when it did not happen.
In fact, June is so smart in how she looks for her Mum, her not being able to work out Grace’s password for her Google account, when it is very obvious, is the one frustration. I liked Reid’s performance and Joaquim de Almeida is good as someone in Colombia who helps June’s investigations.
One of the year’s best thrillers so far.
