Audrey Sullivan (Ashley Park), is an adoptee with white parents, living in Seattle. She works as a lawyer and is promised a promotion to partner if she can close a deal with a Chinese businessman. Audrey and her best friend Lolo Chen (Sherry Cola) take a trip to China with Lolo’s cousin Deadeye (Sabrina Wu) and meet up with Audrey’s old college friend Kat (Stephanie Hsu). When the group meet the businessman, he says that in order for him to do sign with Audrey’s firm, he must know about her birth family, whom she has never met. The group travel across the country to find her Mum.
This is an odd one. There are 4 or 5 real laughs, which you certainly do not get in all modern comedies. However, there are a number of other gags that not only fall flat, but left me squirming with embarrassment, especially a musical sequence and all jokes about Kat’s embarrassing tattoo. There is also one glaring plot hole that weakens the resolution of the story.
Park and Wu, though, are pretty good and a brief appearance by Daniel Dae Kim adds a touch of heart and class.
