Teenagers Tara (Mia McKenna-Bruce), Skye (Lara Peake) and Em (Enva Lewis) go on a rites-of-passage holiday involving much drinking, clubbing and hooking up in Malia on the Greek island of Crete. It should be the best summer of their lives but it ends in disaster.
Written and directed by Molly Manning Walker, in her directorial debut, this is a patience tester, particularly in the first half. The girls are extremely vacuous and annoying, and the numerous scenes of excessive drinking and dancing made me feel very old!
But, the individual personalities of the girls, and the dynamic of the group begins to emerge gradually, making it much more interesting viewing. Tara turns out to be more vulnerable and easily lead than she first appears, and that side of her personality is superbly depicted by McKenna-Bruce.
I was still left feeling grateful that I never went on a holiday like this in my youth, but this turns out to be thought provoking stuff, that will make you think long after the credits roll.
