Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers) was an rising star in American Football until an attack by an obsessed fan threatened to end his career before it really began. When his idol, legendary quarterback Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), invites him to train at his private compound, it seems like Cameron is getting a second chance at fame, but a more sinister fate awaits.

HIM is a film that I completely failed to connect with. I feel no affinity with the peculiarly American macho posturing that is connected to the sport. I would guess that writers Skip Bronkie, Zack Akers and Justin Tipping would claim that it is a critique of that culture but they seem to be too much in love with it. They do make the point that the people who run it are venal and greedy but then continue making it over and over again.

Directing Tipping has an eye for the grotesque but his ability to conjure up some striking visual images does not compensate for an incoherent screenplay. For a supposed horror movie there are no scares, though plenty of gore and it feels like a slog to a revelation at the end that has been signposted early on.
