Marie Kriegel is an independent woman raising her teenage son without anyone else’s help. When he is expelled from cookery school, the only alternative placement is at an expensive private school. Marie has to find a way to raise the money.
That simple story is dominated by a terrific performance by Laure Calamy as Marie. She works as a prostitute to earn a living and whilst her activities are at the forefront of the story, necessarily so as she needs extra cash, Cecile Ducrocq who contributed to the screenplay and directs, does not let her occupation define Marie.
If there is a weakness in the story, it is that a solution to the problem becomes pretty obvious to the viewer long before the otherwise savvy Marie realises.
Her Way is still showing at some art house cinemas and can be rented for home viewing on the usual sites.
