This black comedy/drama was directed by Lynne Ramsay, and written by Ramsay, Enda Walsh and Alice Birch, based on the 2012 novel by Ariana Harwicz. It follows Grace (Jennifer Lawrence), a young mother who develops postpartum depression and alongside her partner Jackson (Robert Pattinson) enters into psychosis.

I have no way of knowing but this feels like a pretty accurate depiction of the condition and Lawrence gives a fearless performance, with Sissy Spacek providing a reminder of her great talent as Jackson’s mum. But there are also some unconvincing sequences, especially at a wedding and towards the end.

It is also, apart from a couple of barbed lines delivered by Grace, unremitting grim and I found it a gruelling watch. Ramsay is generally lauded but I am yet to be convinced.
