In 1991, in the town of Kettle Springs, Missouri, a group of teenagers are partying near the old corn syrup factory. A couple of the teenagers decide to have sex in the surrounding cornfield, but are killed by Frendo, the factory’s clown mascot. In the present day, Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and her father, Glenn (Aaron Abrams), move to Kettle Springs, where Glenn is the new town doctor. As you might expect, their arrival coincides with the return of Frendo.
I am struggling to pinpoint anything original in Eli Craig’s latest horror movie. Inevitably, Glenn’s wife has recently died, putting a strain on his relationship with his daughter. The group that Quinn befriends are pretty annoying in the way that teens in horror films usually are, but that does mean it is amusing to see them dispatched one-by-one.
But, I have to say I was very entertained. The action is well paced, the clowns are quite scary and Douglas shows she could be a star in the making. In the supporting cast, I liked Cassandra Potenza as the bitchy girl in the group, Vincent Muller as a redneck who seems to be channelling James Acaster and of course the ever watchable Will Sasso as the town sheriff.
There are enough gory moments and chuckles to make this good Friday night fayre.
