Directed by Susanna Fogel from a screenplay by Michelle Ashford, Cat Person stars the excellent Emilia Jones as Margot, a 29 year-old college student who works part-time at a cinema. She starts an intense texting relationship with Robert (Nicholas Braun), an older regular customer. They seem to have a deep connection but when they go on a date, she does not enjoy it. She does not want to see him again but he is completely smitten.

This was a curious film that, two days after seeing it, I am still processing. There are some very funny moments, and some shocking ones. There is also a twist, of sorts, towards the end, that will make most people re-assess their feelings towards the characters.

Ashford’s screenplay is intelligentially wrong-footing and Fogel, director of the underrated The Spy Who Dumped Me and writer of Booksmart, shows again that she is a talent to watch.
