Luca Guadagnino re-unites with Call Me By Your Name star Timothee Chalamet in this adaptation of Camille DeAngelis’ romantic horror novel. Chalamet plays Lee, a cannibal, or ‘eater’ who meets 18 year old Maren (Taylor Russell) who has the same affliction and has been abandoned by her single father. The pair go on a trip to find Maren’s mother.
Guadagnino is an acquired taste and it is one (A Bigger Slash aside) that I have not developed. The story meanders for two hours ten minutes without going anywhere of interest. Russell is fine, Chalamet less annoying than normal but is only when Mark Rylance appears as a creepy fellow eater that there is any spark of life.
