Alice (Anna Kendrick) is in a psychologically abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Simon (Charlie Carrick). Alice tells Simon she is going on a work trip but instead goes on a vacation with her two old friends Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku), who Simon disapproves of. Whilst there, Tess and Sophie discover how Simon manipulates and controls Alice.

This is the debut feature for director Mary Nighy, daughter of Bill, hitherto best known for the excellent TV series Traces. She does a great job, along with writer Alanna Francis, in showing how psychological abuse can be as devastating as physical torment, and how someone in denial can convince everyone that nothing is wrong.

Kendrick is brilliantly real as Alice and the rest of the cast give sterling support, though the film does sag a little in the middle and a subplot involving a missing girl feels tacked on unnecessarily.

Alice, Darling is available to rent for the usual services.
