Another telling of the familiar monster story, though this focuses much more on the creator rather than the creature, hence the title. It is stylishly enough presented and it has an unexpected homosexual subtext that I haven’t seen in this tale before, but the story is otherwise too predictable to sustain interest throughout it’s running time.

James McAvoy is okay as the mad titular doctor, but Daniel Radcliffe flounders as the assistant, Igor. He seems like a nice enough guy but I am not convinced that he will breakthrough as an adult actor, and in this role, well, he is no Dwight Frye! The acting honours actually go Freddie Fox, the foppish and untrustworthy aristocrat who is funding their experiments.

Much better than last years’ ‘I Frankenstein’, but desperately average.
